How to install mods (easy + hard method)

Postby Frano35 » Thu Oct 19, 2017 9:23 am

Hello evryone,
In this tutorial I will try to help you install mods, very easy and can be done in less than 5 minutes. First you need some tools for this:
Notepad++ : https://notepad-plus-plus.org/download/v7.5.1.html
GCFScape : http://nemesis.thewavelength.net/?p=26
VTFEdit : http://nemesis.thewavelength.net/index.php?c=178

Be sure to download installers for GCF and VTF and click on all checkboxes for associations with all files they offer.

Next, go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead\bin and find VPK.exe file, copy it and paste shortcut on you desktop. On desktop make folder mods which will help you later for installing mods on hard way.

Then go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead\left4dead and create new folder called "addons". There you will place mods that you wish to install and cusom maps. Next, find file called pak01_dir.vpk, open it with GCFScape and extract all files to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead\left4dead. It will contain folders "materials" "models" and "particles" and if asks, overwrite files. It will take some time to extract files so no worrys. After extracting is done, find "pak01_dir" and rename it to "pak01_dira". Now you are ready for installing mods on easy way, and here are some mods that I use that make games beautifull:

Boomer: http://www.gamemaps.com/details/17129
Hunter: http://www.gamemaps.com/details/17376
Witch: http://www.gamemaps.com/details/19399
Tank: http://www.gamemaps.com/details/17130
Smoker: http://www.gamemaps.com/details/18074
Survivors: http://www.gamemaps.com/details/14202
Autoshotgun: http://www.gamemaps.com/details/18592
Bricks: http://www.gamemaps.com/details/18899

Those are some of the easy mods to install, hard ones require us to edit "pak01_dira" so I will show you on example how to install M16 Sling + Flashlight Fix, but be aware of instructions writen in zip file you download,on website as comments or changelog (gamebanana.com) as they contain instructions.
M16 Fix: https://gamebanana.com/skins/121508

Right click on "pak01_dira" and open with Notepad++. On left side you see numbers, those are number of rows, and for this specific mod, search for those:
In each row, there is code "ÿÿv_rifle" and you must change it to "ÿÿv_rifl3" on all 4 lines.
Here you must change "ÿÿw_rifle_m16a2" to "ÿÿw_rifl3_m16a2" on these rows:

And now you can close notepad after you save it,then copy "models" folder from zip file to your C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead\left4dead and you can launch game and see if it works.

Now we will install mods that need editing with VTFEdit program we downloaded earlier.
Example of install we will use is Silver 1911 from gamemaps:
Silver 1911: http://www.gamemaps.com/details/3005
Now we won't edit "pak01_dira" because this can be simply fixed by replacing some text in mod. Now on desktop create folder mods if you didn't already. Inside that folder, create a new one called Silver 1911 (or any name of folder, just choose name if you want to edit more mods at same time so you don't get confused :& ). Open mod with GCFScape and extract it to mods/Siler 1911 folder. There will be folders going like this root/materials/models/v_models/weapons/pistol and inside folder pistol you will see file called v_pistol_referenca.

To make it work (easy way) you must change referenca to reference, because reference is original name and in that time mod was made, there was diffrent way of making mods work so I am showing how to install them in this time easy way. After you have change it to v_pistol_reference go back to folder root, and drag & drop "root" folder on file VPK.exe on your desktop. It will create a new vpk file called "root" and you can change it name to whatever you want, then just move file to addons folder in l4d folder and you can run game and see if it works.

NOTE: There are some mods that require editing VMT file, inside it there are changes too, so for example if there was v_pistol_referenca.vmt file, you should rename it to v_pistol_reference and open it and find where it says ..._referenca and change to ..._reference.

There is map for testing textures/mods and its called Tumtara, so here is the link:
Tumtara: http://www.gamemaps.com/details/16810

Map loads faster so it is ideal for checking if re-skins/new models are working properly. Hope you enjoyed reading this and if I made mistake say where I went wrong and I will try to fix it. If this is hard to follow I will make video about it.

Have fun modding

EDIT: Here is christmas pack for people that would use it, just drag & drop mod in addons ;)

That's nice tutorial for those who are interested to make their game look different and refreshing to get away from its original and vanilla looks.

keep up the good work.
I still remember what happened last time, wonder if i should reveal the truth or keep it buried.
